Digital Teaching and Learning: Wiki
Session Description: Equipping students with a digital-age education is a priority for the NC Department of Public Instruction. Join us to learn more about the implementation of the North Carolina Digital Learning Plan and the Digital Learning Competencies for Administrators. In this session, we will highlight the collaborative work of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the Friday Institute to support the implementation of the Digital Learning Plan. In addition, participants will review the NC Digital Learning Competencies for Administrators within the context of the current North Carolina Standards for School Executives. School and district administrators will use these competencies to improve their practice, build capacity in their staff, and drive student learning within their schools.

North Carolina Student Perception Surveys: Principals will learn about the North Carolina Student Perception Surveys, including the fall 2016 survey administration schedule, options for participation, and where to find more information.

North Carolina Educator Value-Added Assessment: The purpose of this session is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the Educator Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS) in order to prepare them for making productive data-based decisions in their school or district. Participants will learn some common misuses of EVAAS and their trappings.

Using NBCTs as Teacher Leaders and to Recruit and Retain Teachers: Session 1, Room B

Session Description: National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) are an untapped resource for teacher recruitment and retention. In this session, principals will learn how to utilize these teachers to support their recruitment and retention efforts. Principals will review data, identify strategies and create an action plan to support this work in their school. (We will examine using a panel of NBCT to co-present in this session)

How to be an Early College in a Traditional High School: Session 2, Room C & Session 3, Room C

Session Description: Jones Senior High School will share how they partnered with Lenoir Community College to enroll students in dual enrollment classes to transform Jones Senior into it's own unofficial early college so it fits the needs of each student. We have some students at Jones Senior graduating with 40+ college transfer credits and others are leaving with certifications such as their Basic EMS Certificate and CNA Certification. We would like to share our experiences (and pitfalls) so other high schools and students across the state can take full advantage of the dual enrollment courses.

Creating a Culture of Excellence: Session 1, Room D & Session 3, Room B

Session Description: A “No Excuses” culture of excellence propels meaningful PLCs that help develop young teachers into effective leaders. Real data drives the PLC conversation and helps staff members identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. Creating a culture where excellence is the standard is paramount to developing new teachers, creating “buy-in” with disinterested staff members and developing trust in the community.

Session Description: With an increased emphasis on technology integration and students to be Future Ready, it is of the utmost importance of administrators to understand what NC Teaching Standard 4D is supposed to look like in the classroom. Join Mrs. Teika Clavell and Ms. Jill Darrough, NCDPI Digital Teaching PD Team to be immersed in Mrs. Clavell's 8th grade Science Classroom; a fully flipped digitally effective learning
environment. Teika and Jill will also discuss NC Digital Learning Competencies and Google Apps for Education how they can be a resource to all teachers looking to reach that distinguished performance rating.

Leading with a Focus on Positive School Climate: What it Looks Like and How it Happens: Session 2, Room B

Session Description: Participants will have the opportunity to explore how to utilize shared leadership in creating a productive school-wide learning environment in which students have a sense of belonging and connectedness to their school and an accountability to learning. Leaders will understand the importance of nurturing a positive school climate, its connection to educational outcomes, and its impact on student learning and professional growth, including; building supportive relationships with students to increase student learning and achievement, creating a shared vision and purpose with intentional approaches to enhance school connectedness, productively using relational power, not positional power.

Building a Culture of Achievement: Session 2, Room D & Session 3, Room D
Cindy Talbert, Principal Snipes Elementary School, and Teresa Conoly, Assistant Principal Snipes Academy or Arts & Design, New Hanover County

Session Description: Snipes Academy of Arts and Design is an urban magnet school in Wilmington that is 100% free and reduced lunch. Snipes Academy was once designated as a persistently low performing school in Wilmington. Over the last three years, the school has either exceeded or met growth. Participants in this session will learn about the structures and initiatives that have been implemented during the transformation process. Topics that will be highlighted include our MTSS process, PBIS and our Cupcake Cafe, PLCs, Data Discussions, Teacher Leadership, Parent and Community Engagement, and our NC STAR process that is recognized at the state level. Cindy Talbert is in her fifth year as a SAM principal and will share how this has impacted the school transformation process.

Service Support Team

The Statewide System of Support is comprised of four service support teams. Within these area teams, cross-agency staff members collaborate to serve the state's eight prosperity zones, by collecting and analyzing data to identify common needs and offer customized support for school improvement by engaging in the following:
  • Analyze data to develop and implement targeted professional learning
  • Identify and develop resources for educator growth and improvement
  • Guide LEAs and Charters with effective resource allocation decisions
  • Assess and modify the quality and alignment of the services provided by the team

TWC Training Registration

The Department of Public Instruction and the New Teacher Center (NTC) will be hosting two, three-hour, regional, interactive workshops to assist school administrators with understanding their school/district results, facilitating dialogue on teaching and learning conditions, and utilizing resources for school improvement planning. Each session is scheduled for registration to begin at 8:30 am with the session starting promptly at 9:00 am and ending at 12:00 pm. The same session will be repeated with registration starting at 12:30 with the morning session being repeated from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
